Dutch export plate insurance extension: 14 more days, wherever you are

Waiting for an inspection or a registration appointment while your 14 days of cover run down? Request a two-week extension without leaving home. It costs from €120, needs the insurer's approval and ends with a new Green Card in your inbox.

  • Each 14-day extension from €120
  • No need to travel to Hengelo
  • Green Card delivered to your inbox

from €120 per 14 days

Temporary Dutch export insurance covers 14 days. If the car is not yet registered in its new country by then, the export insurance can be extended by two weeks. With Auto Export Doetinchem you arrange that remotely, whether you are still near Doetinchem or already across the border.

There is no need to return to our RDW-approved export desk in Hengelo. We are an export company, not an insurer: we arrange the extension with our insurance partner, and the new cover only starts once the insurer has approved it.

Near Doetinchem or across the border: all online

Our desk is about an hour's drive from the Simonsplein in Doetinchem. For an extension you can stay exactly where you are:

  • Requests go through the form on this page, WhatsApp or email.
  • Documents can be photos or PDFs; a sharp phone photo of your Green Card or policy is fine.
  • The new certificate with Green Card reaches you by email, as a PDF where this is permitted.

Why 14 days are sometimes not enough

The temporary export insurance with Green Card is meant for the journey abroad. Sometimes plans slip after that:

  • registration or import takes longer because an inspection still has to happen, the registration office has no appointment yet or paperwork is still missing;
  • the transport runs late;
  • the buyer needs more time.

An extension gives you another 14 days of liability cover for damage to third parties. It comes with a new insurance certificate, which is also how you extend the Green Card: you receive a new one for the extra period.

Four steps to an extension

  1. Send us a message through the form, WhatsApp or email, with everything from the checklist further down.
  2. We put it to the insurer. If the insurer agrees, we tell you the price.
  3. Payment is made by bank transfer.
  4. Your new certificate with Green Card lands in your inbox, as a PDF where permitted. Check that the dates, registration number and names are right.

How quickly this goes depends on the insurer, so we do not promise a processing time.

Getting your details ready

A complete request saves questions later. Please include:

  • the registration number;
  • your current Green Card or policy, as an image or PDF;
  • the date your current cover ends;
  • the vehicle's current location and its destination country;
  • who the policyholder and the driver are, with their details.

The form cannot carry attachments. Send the photo or PDF separately by WhatsApp or email and mention the registration number, so we can match it to your request.

Insured with another provider?

Even if someone else arranged your current export insurance, we can extend the cover by two weeks. We do this with follow-on insurance, which also needs the insurer's approval first. Include a readable copy of the Green Card or policy you have now.

What an extension costs

Expect to pay from €120 for every extra 14 days, including VAT where applicable. Heavy or non-standard vehicles can cost more, and you always know the amount before you pay. If the extra fortnight still falls short, you can extend again, always by 14 days and always with the insurer's approval.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. Without valid insurance the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is apply. The policy and Green Card state the countries and drivers covered.

The limits of an extension, honestly

An extension applies to the insurance, not to the registration: extending the insurance on Dutch export plates adds no days to the plates themselves. What stays the same:

  • The Dutch time limit. After deregistration you have 14 days on Dutch public roads, and never past the date the APK, the Dutch roadworthiness test, runs out (RDW). The extension does not move that.
  • Has the car not left the Netherlands within the 14 days? Then it may no longer be driven there; it can only be moved by trailer or car transporter.
  • Across the border. There, the country the vehicle is in sets the rules, and the treatment of a Dutch export registration varies by country, as the RDW explains under special registration certificates (in Dutch). Check before the car goes back on the road after its first 14 days.
  • What your papers say. The policy and Green Card list which countries and which driver the cover applies to.
  • Uninsured means parked. A vehicle without valid insurance may not be used on the road. Ask early enough that the new cover starts the moment the old one ends.

Frequently asked questions

Does my time on Dutch roads start again when I extend?

No. Only the insurance gets extra time. In the Netherlands you keep 14 days on public roads after deregistration, capped by the APK expiry date, and nothing is added to that. If the car is still in the Netherlands afterwards, it can only leave on a trailer or car transporter.

Can I wait until the last day of my cover?

Start as soon as it becomes clear that 14 days will be too tight. The insurer assesses each extension first, and the new period has to start where your current cover stops. We cannot know in advance how long approval takes, so waiting for the final day is a gamble.

What happens if the insurer says no?

Then the extension does not go ahead. Payment only happens after approval and our price confirmation. When the current cover ends, the vehicle may not be driven uninsured; carried on a trailer or car transporter, it usually needs no driving insurance.

In which countries does the extended cover apply?

That is stated in the new policy and on the new Green Card. The Council of Bureaux explains that the card is proof of at least the compulsory third-party cover of the country being visited. Which countries apply to you is in your own documents; we do not publish a country list.

Someone else will be driving. What do I need to do?

Name that driver in your request and include their details. The policy and Green Card determine who is covered, so the information has to be accurate.
