A car that leaves the Netherlands on its own wheels after export must be insured on the way. For this we arrange temporary export insurance: 14 days of third-party liability cover, a Green Card as international proof of insurance, and white export plates. We do this through our insurance partner, from €100.
If you are collecting a car in Doetinchem or elsewhere in the Achterhoek, arrange the insurance in the same visit as the export and the plates. Then you only need to make the trip to our RDW-approved desk in Hengelo once.
What the temporary export insurance covers
Export insurance in the Netherlands is temporary third-party liability insurance (WA in Dutch): it covers damage to third parties. The compulsory insurance for motor vehicles is set out in the Dutch Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act (WAM). After export the Dutch owner's insurance obligation ends, but according to the RDW the vehicle must still be insured during the export trip in the Netherlands:
- car, van or motorhome: insurance and APK required;
- motorcycle, scooter or moped: insurance required, no APK;
- caravan or trailer: no insurance of its own, but the towing vehicle must be insured; APK only above 3,500 kg;
- truck: insurance and APK required, price on request.
APK is the Dutch roadworthiness test.
The Green Card and its limits
According to the Council of Bureaux, the Green Card system includes 47 countries. A Green Card shows that the vehicle has at least the compulsory third-party cover of the country you visit.
That does not mean you are covered everywhere. Your policy and Green Card decide in which countries and for which driver the insurance applies, which is why we never give you a list of countries ourselves. Read your papers before you set off and plan your route accordingly.
Where possible you also receive the Green Card as a PDF, handy as a backup on your phone. The policy and the Green Card itself always take precedence.
Start the cover on your departure date
The cover runs for 14 days, so deregister as close to departure as you can and let the insurance start as soon as the car goes on the road on its export registration. If the car has to stay parked on a public road for a few days after deregistration, agree the start date with us in advance. Keep two other limits in mind: after deregistration you may drive on Dutch public roads for 14 days, and the export registration is never valid beyond the APK.
To arrange the insurance we need:
- the start date you want;
- destination and route;
- details of the policyholder and the driver;
- for a business buyer: company name, address and VAT number.
Send these by WhatsApp or through the form before your visit, so the application can be prepared and your visit stays short. With complete documents, a standard request at the desk is usually ready in about 15 minutes.
Price of the export insurance
Export insurance with white plates costs from €100, without the export document. If the car still has to be deregistered, the complete export package from €150 includes the export documents, the vrijwaringsbewijs, 14 days of cover, the Green Card and the white export plates.

Before you set off
- Rules for a Dutch export registration differ per country, so check your destination and every transit country.
- Make sure the right driver is named, because the policy decides who is covered.
- Registration at home taking longer? You can extend the export insurance online; that page also explains what an extension does not change.
- Outside the EU and EFTA, a customs export declaration (EX-A) may also be needed.
- Our desk is in Hengelo in Overijssel, not in Hengelo in Gelderland. Call or message us about 20 minutes before you arrive.

Frequently asked questions
Are you the insurer?
No. We arrange the temporary export insurance through our insurance partner. The policy and the Green Card come from the insurer and determine in which countries and for which driver you are covered.
Is damage to my own car covered?
This is third-party liability insurance, meant for damage caused to others. The policy states exactly what is and is not covered.
Can I extend the insurance?
Yes. If registration abroad takes longer, for example, we arrange a 14-day extension online, from €120 and with the insurer's approval. You can extend more than once, 14 days at a time. Ask in good time so the new cover follows on. The export registration itself is not extended: on Dutch public roads it stays at 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date.
Do I need export insurance if the car is transported?
A vehicle carried on a trailer or car transporter usually needs no driving insurance of its own. The export document is still required.
