EX-A for your vehicle from Doetinchem: export outside the EU
Sending a vehicle to a country outside the EU, such as Ukraine or Turkey? On top of the RDW export, an export declaration with Dutch Customs is required: the EX-A. We submit it for you, from €150.
- EX-A customs document from €150
- Filed Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00
- Send your details ahead by WhatsApp
from €150
Selling a vehicle to a buyer in Serbia or the United Kingdom, or moving with your car to a country outside the European Union? Then the Dutch export document on its own is not enough. For destinations outside the EU, an export declaration must also be filed with Dutch Customs: in practice, the EX-A document. Auto Export Doetinchem submits it for you.
Our RDW-approved desk is in Hengelo, Overijssel, about 60 km from the Simonsplein, so a little planning goes a long way. Below you can read when an EX-A is required, what we need from you and how to time your visit.
Heading to Serbia or Turkey from Doetinchem? Then you need an EX-A
You need an EX-A when the vehicle leaves for a country outside the EU. Business.gov.nl states that in that case you must also file an export declaration with Dutch Customs. Examples include the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Serbia, Turkey, Morocco and countries in Africa or the Middle East. Import and registration rules in those countries differ, and we do not advise on them.
If the vehicle stays within the EU, for example in Germany, Belgium or Poland, no EX-A is required.
RDW export and EX-A customs declaration: you need both
The EX-A does not replace the export document; it comes in addition to it. The vehicle is deregistered for export in the Dutch register in any case, at our desk or remotely. You can read more on our page about car export paperwork. For that deregistration, please bring:
Checklist
- Valid passport, ID card or driving licence of the person the export is registered to
- The Dutch registration card (kentekencard) with its registration code (tenaamstellingscode), or the old paper parts (part 1B and the transfer certificate)
- The Dutch yellow number plates (one plate for a motorcycle, scooter, moped, caravan or trailer)
- The current mileage
- The full foreign address of the buyer
- For insurance and plates: start date, destination and route, plus details of the policyholder and the driver
Source: RDW. For a business buyer we also need the company name, address and VAT number.
The export declaration is then a separate application with Dutch Customs. If the vehicle is driven to the border, it also needs white export plates and temporary export insurance with a Green Card. The policy and Green Card determine in which countries you are covered, so check this for any route beyond the EU.
The EX-A checklist explained: invoice, EORI, border and vehicle
EX-A customs document at a glance
- Price
- from €150
- Application with Dutch Customs
- Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00
What we need from you
- The vehicle is in the Netherlands, with its Dutch registration certificate, for a possible customs inspection
- The last border crossing from the EU to outside the EU (where the vehicle leaves the EU)
- An invoice with the person or company abroad as the buyer
- A valid EORI number of the selling party
We submit the application to the customs officer. Once it is approved, we receive the EX-A customs document. The RDW export document (from €50) comes on top of this; we arrange that too.
Each item on the list has a purpose:
- The vehicle is in the Netherlands. Customs may decide to inspect it, so it has to be here, with its Dutch registration certificate, when we file the declaration.
- The last border crossing. Customs needs to know where the vehicle leaves the EU, known as the office of exit. Agree the route with the buyer or transport company in advance.
- An invoice in the foreign buyer's name. It shows which person or company abroad is buying the vehicle.
- A valid EORI number of the seller. The exporter needs this number for all customs operations.
EORI number: free from Dutch Customs, requested by the seller
No EORI number yet? It is free, and the selling party applies for it with Dutch Customs. Business.gov.nl explains the EORI number and how to get one. We do not request it on your behalf. Arrange it in good time, because without a valid EORI number we cannot file the declaration.
Weekend visit? Customs only takes EX-A filings on weekdays
This is the key planning point. Our desk is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:30, and outside those hours by appointment. Applications to the customs officer, however, can only be made Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00. If you come on a Saturday or Sunday for the RDW export, the EX-A has to wait for a weekday.
Once it is approved, we receive the EX-A customs document. We cannot say how long the assessment takes, as Dutch Customs decides, so we give no time frame and make no promises about approval.
One drive from Doetinchem: preparing the EX-A in advance
From the Simonsplein it is about 60 km to Slachthuisweg 135, roughly an hour via the N315. Make sure your satnav is set to Hengelo in Overijssel, not Hengelo in Gelderland near Zelhem. To keep it to one trip:
- Send the invoice, EORI number and planned border crossing ahead by WhatsApp, email or the form.
- Choose a weekday for your appointment if you can, as Customs only accepts applications on weekdays.
- Keep the vehicle and its Dutch registration certificate available in the Netherlands for a possible spot check.
- Call or message us about 20 minutes before you arrive.
Cannot come in person? The RDW export can also be arranged remotely, with the yellow plates sent to us by post or courier. We start once they arrive.
What the EX-A costs alongside the export papers
The EX-A customs document costs from €150, including VAT where applicable. The RDW export document, from €50, is charged separately, and if the vehicle is driven, the complete export package with insurance and plates is available from €150. You always know the price in advance; all rates are listed on our car export papers prices page.
Not sure whether your destination needs an EX-A? Contact the export desk; advice and help are free of charge.
Exporting today?
Call or message us for free advice or an appointment, also outside office hours. On Sundays a higher rate applies; you always know the price in advance.
EX-A questions from vehicle owners in Doetinchem
Do I need an EX-A if the car is going to Germany or Poland?
No. Within the EU no EX-A is needed. You arrange the RDW export with us and, if the car is driven there, export insurance and white plates.
What is an EORI number and who applies for it?
An EORI number is needed for all customs operations. For the EX-A, the selling party, the exporter, must have a valid EORI number. It is free, and the seller requests it from Dutch Customs; we do not apply for it.
Why does the vehicle have to be in the Netherlands?
Dutch Customs may carry out a spot check on the vehicle, together with its Dutch registration certificate. That is why the vehicle must be in the Netherlands when we submit the declaration. Please plan the departure with us.
How long does approval take?
We do not give a time frame, because Dutch Customs decides. We submit applications Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 and receive the EX-A document once it has been approved.
What does the EX-A cost?
From €150, including VAT where applicable. This comes on top of the RDW export document, from €50. We confirm the price in advance.
